1. What’s Interesting in Meghri?

Meghri is the southernmost city in Armenia, and it’s still relatively unknown to travelers—though it shouldn’t be! You’ll find uniquely shaped mountains, fantastic landscapes, and delicious fruits here. Today, we’ll share how to get to Meghri affordably and safely.

Just imagine! The locals grow persimmons, figs, olives, and even kiwis in their gardens. The city boasts a rich history, having been at the crossroads of three empires: Ottoman, Persian, and Russian.

Meghri is located along the river of the same name and is quite far from the capital (over 370 km away). But you can easily reach it by:

  • Minibus
  • Car
  • Transfer (taxi)

2. How to Get to Meghri by Plane

If you’re wondering how to reach Meghri from another country, consider flying. However, there likely won’t be a direct flight, as the local airport is not always open due to the unstable situation nearby (Iran).

You can purchase a ticket to Yerevan and then take public transport or a transfer to Meghri. This option is also suitable for those traveling from Belarus, Georgia, or any other European country.

How to Get from Zvartnots Airport to Meghri

Upon arrival, you have three options for getting from the airport to Meghri: public transport, taxi, or transfer. Let’s take a closer look at each option.

Public Transport

The 201 bus departs from Zvartnots Airport every half hour. You’ll need to ride it to France Square, then wait 11 minutes and transfer to bus 1, which will take you to Northern Bus Station. From there, you can buy a ticket for marshrutka (minibus) 611, which goes to Kapan — the city that’s convenient for reaching Meghri by taxi or transfer.

Travel Time: 9 hours 10 minutes
Cost: 2,900 AMD ( $7.48)

Helpful Tip! Marshrutka 611 departs only once a day at 8:30 AM from Northern Bus Station, so this option works best if you arrive before 6:00 AM.

Taxi

You can always find a taxi near the airport. However, prices may vary depending on the provider and the level of comfort offered.

Travel Time: 6 hours 52 minutes
Cost: Varies by provider

Transfer

If you prefer to choose a reliable driver in advance and ensure that the vehicle has everything you need, consider booking a transfer directly from the airport to Meghri.

On the GoTrip website, you can select your driver. Each driver has a profile with a photo, reviews, and details about their vehicle (make, passenger capacity, luggage space, etc.). You can choose from drivers who speak English well. Waiting for passengers, stops along the way, booking, and cancellations are all free of charge. The driver will meet you in the airport’s arrival area and will be holding a sign with your name. If you need the driver for several days, you can also book a “Multi-Day Transfer” (from 2 to 10 days).

By the way, there are also some interesting sights around Kapan. We recommend visiting the Baghaberd Fortress and the Shikahogh Nature Reserve.

Once you arrive in Kapan, you’ll need to take a taxi or transfer to get to Meghri. It’s about 72 km away, which will take approximately another 1 hour and 25 minutes. The cost for this ride will be around 12,000 AMD (approximately $31.58).

And if you get the chance to have dinner on a farm, don’t pass it up! You won’t find food that delicious anywhere else. As for Armenian hospitality, we think it speaks for itself!
